Tip Calculator
Calculating…
How the tip is calculated
Tip = bill × tip percentage ÷ 100. The total is the bill plus the tip, and each person pays the total divided by the number of people.
For an $84.50 bill with a 20% tip: the tip is $16.90, the total is $101.40, and two people each pay $50.70.
Typical tip amounts in the United States
- Sit-down restaurants: 15% to 20% of the bill before tax.
- Delivery and taxi or rideshare: about 15% to 20%, more in bad weather.
- Hair salons and similar services: about 15% to 20%.
- Check the bill first: some restaurants add a service charge automatically, especially for large groups.
Tip on the pre-tax amount
Many people tip on the amount before sales tax. Enter the pre-tax subtotal in the bill field if that is your habit.
