The formula
Needed score = (desired grade − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight. With a current grade of 85%, a final worth 30% and a goal of 90%: (90 − 85 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 101.7%.
Reading the result
- Above 100% means the goal cannot be reached with the final alone, unless your teacher offers extra credit.
- Zero or below means you already have the grade, even with a zero on the final.
Check your syllabus
Use the weight stated in your syllabus. Some courses drop the lowest score or round grades, which this simple calculation does not include.
